CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (July 15, 2020) – Unum (NYSE: UNM) is named a best place to work for disability inclusion after earning a perfect score on the 2020 Disability Equality Index® (DEI).

The benchmark is a joint initiative of the Disability:IN and American Association of People with Disabilities and provides an objective measure of disability inclusion practices and procedures. Companies are rated on several key performance indicators including culture, leadership, accessibility, employment, community engagement and supplier diversity.

“Unum is committed to be an inclusive, diverse and welcoming company for our employees,” said Liz Ahmed, executive vice president of People, Communications and Corporate Social Responsibility. “It’s important for every employee to feel valued for their contributions and for our workforce to reflect the millions of people and families we protect.”

Unum offers a variety of benefits, resources, and educational programs to advance an inclusive culture so all employees can reach their full potential. More than 1,400 employees are involved in Employee Resource Groups to champion initiatives related to creating an inclusive culture.

The company’s Ability Employee Resource Group is a community of employees working with disabilities, caregivers to family members, and disability allies. The group advocates for awareness of working with disabilities and helps others understand the challenges they face, explores ways to better connect with customers, and empowers the positive abilities of employees living with a disability.

“This group supports employees with disabilities, improves accessibility around the company, and ensures the perspectives of people with disabilities are reflected in the way we do business,” said Ken Shapiro, knowledge management consultant and co-leader of Unum’s Ability ERG. Shapiro had an acquired brain injury ten years ago, learning firsthand the support Unum provides as a disability insurer and an employer.
